Experts predict chicken coops will be the backyard aesthetic trending this spring, as searches related to the installations have exploded in the U.S.
The study, conducted by property buying expert Eden Emerald Buyers Agent, found that Pinterest searches around chicken coops have skyrocketed over the past three months.
The addition of a pen can add a rustic, farmhouse feel to a garden design, as well as offer a sustainable method for collecting fresh eggs.
Amid the craze, Martha Stewart recently took to Instagram to share that one of the very first things she did after moving into her first home was build a chicken coop, alongside a photo taken in 1972.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s chicken coop, named ‘Archie’s Chick Inn,’ can be spotted in the Netflix show With Love, Meghan, released on the platform at the start of March.
The aesthetic has rapidly increased in popularity in the past three months, with searches for ‘backyard chicken coop plans’ rising by 81% on Pinterest.
Searches for ‘chicken coop run’ and ‘chicken coop decor’ have also risen by 163% and 108%, respectively.
It seems Americans are especially eager to add the theme to their backyards themselves, as searches for ‘easy DIY chicken coop plans’ are up by a whopping 212%.
Commenting on the findings, Josh Roth, Chief Buyers Agent at Eden Emerald Buyers Agent, says,
“As the study suggests, we can expect that chicken coops will appear in many Americans’ backyards this Spring.
“With high profile public figures such as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle already on board the trend in their home, it’s likely many others will want to embrace the look too, as they admire the country charm these coops bring.
“It is also likely inspired by the warmer weather, as collecting eggs and feeding the chickens can be enjoyed in the sun.
“However, before jumping on this trend, it’s important you consider the costs to see whether it is affordable.
“There are expenses related to raising chickens, purchasing products to keep the coop clean, and potentially refurbishing the coop to preserve the appearance.
“Having chickens is a huge responsibility, and you should only commit to this if you are confident that you can take this on well.
“If you’re prepared, once you have installed your chicken coop, you will need to keep up with wood care to maintain a polished look and check for damage, such as dampness, to prevent rotting.
“You can add decorative touches to your coop, like painted designs, fairy lights, vintage decor such as watering cans, or a nameplate.
“While these elements will also require upkeep, they can help enhance the aesthetic and personalize the look.”
